125th Anniversary Concert

A hugely appreciative full house at the fantastic Tung Auditorium witnessed the premiere performance of Keith Orrel’s outstanding new work, ‘Four Rivers’, commissioned by LWC.

Keith was delighted to welcome his former piano teacher, the acclaimed pianist Martin Roscoe, to help the Choir celebrate 125 years of glorious singing.

Many thanks to special guests, Lord Lieutenant Mark Blundell, Deputy Lord Lieutenant Billy Hui and their wives Suzanne and Kerry, plus Guy and Heather Kelland whose generous sponsorship contributed greatly to the success of the evening.

And an extra special thank you to the wonderful Jean Hathorne and her son Charles for their presence. Jean is the grand-daughter of the Harry Evans, Liverpool Welsh Choral’s very first Choir Master in 1900.

A retiring collecting in aid of Clatterbridge Cancer Charity raised £418.79!

LIVERPOOL WELSH CHORAL were back on the Wirral singing the choral masterpiece that is Faure Requiem, alongside the beautiful Messe Solennelle De Saint Cecile.

Following their triumphant performance of Requiem by Verdi at the magnificent Anglican Cathedral in the Spring, LWC began their 125th anniversary season with a very different version of the funeral mass.

Faure’s Requiem, described as unique, concentrates on the true meaning of ‘Requiem’ or ‘rest’. Leaving behind the horrors of death and subsequent judgement, he focuses on peaceful acceptance resulting in a composition which provides serenity and comfort to the listener.

In conjunction with Gounod’s acclaimed Mass, composed in honour of the patron saint of music, Saint Cecilia which combines simplicity with operatic dramatic elements, this concert gave an evening of musical joy and beauty with a message of awe and reverence for the divine mysteries.

The Choral Symphony

Liverpool Welsh Choral and Liverpool Mozart Orchestra joined forces to perform Beethoven No.9 “The Choral Symphony”, which is regarded as one of the most iconic and influential works in classical music.  Consisting of four movements, including the famous choral setting of Friedrich Schiller’s poem “An die Frude” (Ode to Joy), the masterpiece transcends time and continues to inspire generations of music lovers even today.

“Just to say a colossal, immeasurable thank you for tonight – a standing ovation thoroughly deserved all round. The LWC were blisteringly brilliant in every corner, and I can’t thank you enough.  We did the work proud and I’ve had lots of great audience feedback about how doing it in the smaller venue of Tung added to the excitement of the whole concert. We will look forward to working with you again in the future.”
